Don’t Eat That! Deliciously Awful Foods We Shouldn’t Touch

You may be shocked to find out which food we eat is the worst for us, especially when you realize how often you eat it. While it’s OK to splurge every now and then, there are some items that should never cross your lips.

Here are some delicious foods that should stay off your grocery list and out of your mouth!

Tilefish

TilefishWe know that fish needs to be consumed in moderation due to mercury exposure, but the tilefish takes the cake for the king of toxins, even over the swordfish and sharks.

When exposed to a toxin like mercury, the body’s nervous system can experience effects such as hallucinations, suicidal tendencies, and even psychotic reactions. Whatever you do, avoid this fish at all costs.

Microwave Popcorn

Microwave PopcornSure, popcorn at the movies is always a good idea. But when it comes to our health, taking the shortcut with microwave popcorn is not.

Lined with the harmful chemical perfluorooctanoic acid, found in Teflon pots and pans, over-consumption of this type of popped corn can potentially lead to infertility and several types of cancer. If that wasn’t bad enough, the chemical diacetyl can also be found in microwave popcorn; diacetyl is known to break down layers of cells that protect our brains. Scary!

Fast Food Chicken Nuggets

Fast Food Chicken NuggetsHave you ever seen the videos of what “chicken” nuggets really are at fast food chains? We’re not sure to tell you whether to watch them or not since they are quite disturbing, but most people are aware of the reality behind fast food chicken nuggets by now.

Containing synthetic ingredients like fatty acids, or diglycerides, red dye and harmful additives that can threaten the liver and digestive system, these little nuggets are the formula to weight gain.

Candy

candy.jpgIt is no secret that candy is essentially pretty awful for us thanks to its delicious and addicting sweetness, but this artery- clogging food has a direct effect on our brains due to its artificial coloring.

Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 have both been proven to increase symptoms of ADD in young children, which really gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “bouncing off the walls.” Candy is decent in moderation, but overexposure to its tasty ways can result in some serious mental consequences.

Cereal

cerea;.jpgThey say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but eating over- processed cereals is definitely not the way to go. Each pebble, puff and charm is laced with cancer causing chemicals BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) and BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole.)

These early morning munchies have been proven to promote diabetes, heart disease and obesity thanks to their highly addictive sugars. Next time you’re looking for a cereal, choose a low- sugar, healthier snack. Trust us.

Processed Meat

Meat products including ham and sausages isolated on whiteYes, the convenience of Subway is tempting even with its low-grade meat. Same thing goes for packaged, store-bought turkey or ham, but what we are ingesting when indulging in our lunchtime sandwiches is so much worse than we realize.

Packed with harmful nitrates that increase chance of diabetes and stuffed with sodium, these meats are some of the worst foods for our bodies and our minds.

Deep Fried Foods

Deep-fried foods have been directly linked to depression thanks to the hydrogenated oil they are scorched in that allows them to be more “shelf safe.” Instead of getting the calamari next time, try a side salad or cheese plate. Avoid the fried like the plague!

Frozen Foods

Frozen FoodsAhhhh… the convenience of a frozen pizza, you really can’t beat that, and Digornio knows it. In order to ensure the food’s shelf life, frozen foods are “stocked” with harmful preservatives, artificial fillers and tons of sodium.

It had to be too good to be true, right? Not only do these unnatural ingredients destroy our bodies, but they can even affect us mentally causing various shifts in mood.

Chinese Food

Chinese FoodTalk about addicting! Chinese food is the poster child for the processed flavor enhancer MSG, or monosodium glutamate.

These devious enhancers actually increase our appetite and are terrible for our overall health. Although the FDA deems MSG as “generally recognized as safe,” we know the real message behind MSG.

Yes, it leads to weight gain, sugar crashes and an overstuffed stomach, but they knowingly over serve large portions of sodium-filled sweets that are detrimental to our heart health and overall well-being.

Ice Cream

Containing soybean oil and artificial sugars may come as no surprise, but did you know that ice cream is packed with titanium dioxide? This little chemical is found in sunblock and is responsible for the white color that it is so well known for. Yikes!

The trans fat that a McDonald’s McGriddle contains will seriously shock — and possibly scare — you. When purchasing some frozen ones from the store, look out for the ingredient hydrogenated soybean oil and do your best to avoid it!

Maple Syrup

High fructose corn syrup is one of the most recognizable, addicting and harmful ingredients known to man and can be found in so many different foods. The caramel coloring doesn’t help either!

Farmed Salmon

Farmed SalmonAlthough salmon can be an excellent source of protein, minerals and vitamins, farm-raised salmon is a facade of pink dyed inflammatory omega-6s and fish soy.

These cancer-causing additives were even banned in 1979, but have still managed to sneak their way onto our plates. Instead of indulging in the wrong type of fish next time, make sure your salmon is wild and rich in omega-3s.

Chef Boyardee

With soybean oil, high fructose corn syrup and caramel coloring, you would think that you know the worst of this fake pasta, but our enemy glutamic acid lurks silently in the corner. This chemical is responsible for migraines, nausea, difficulty breathing and changes in heart rate.

Doritos Chips

Doritos ChipsNot many people really understand how tricky these chips are, but we do. Packed with MSG, Doritos chips in particular are created specifically to bend your pant waist without you even realizing it.

This harmful (yet delicious) chip can easily be consumed and do nothing to fill the human body while simultaneously tricking the mind into wanting more. Evil, evil MSG.

Cheetos

CheetosWhen it comes to food tricking the mind, there is no competitor like the dangerously delicious Cheetos. As we all know, the minute Cheetos make contact with our tongue they become this melted, cheesy treat that drives our taste buds wild, right?

Well, the MSG found in Cheetos not only makes them addictive, but has a similar effect like that of Doritos — fooling the mind of its victim at the mercy of the grumbling of a hungry stomach. Even the crunchy noise draws us in for just one more, or two.

Oreos

OreosOreos make part of the list that we don’t find all that surprising considering the shelf life on them, but they were even proven to be more addictive than cocaine and morphine in 2013.

The sweetness of the high fructose corn syrup, palm oil and alkali processed cocoa make Oreos a huge contender in the battle of addiction. Just try to eat one and see what happens!

Canned Soup

Canned SoupYou wouldn’t think canned soup could be too harmful, even a healthier kind, but the highly suspicious shelf life on these soups has everything to do with our favorite chemical MSG.

Making the product long lasting and highly addictive, it is clear that you can’t even trust the name Campbell. It is crazy how many awful foods we consume often that are dripping with this chemical!

Muffins

MuffinsEver feel awful after eating a huge chocolate chip muffin? You are not alone. Muffins are among the most highly addictive foods with their delicious high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil and trans fat.

After a study done in Montreal proving that foods of this particular nature were insanely addictive and bad for our health, the animals that were tested displayed actual withdrawal symptoms and were more prone to sensitivity in stressful situations. There is a reason they call it a muffin top, after all.

Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and CheeseWhat you don’t know won’t hurt you, but there is something you need to know about macaroni and cheese. This gooey treat has not only been linked to cancer, ADHD and allergies thanks to its yummy Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 food coloring, but even the color isn’t real….

The food dye comes from actual coal tar, similar to the chemical used to seat-coat industrial floors and kill lice in shampoo.

Tofu

TofuAlthough tofu may seem like the perfect way to eat something that resembles meat without involving yourself in the killing of innocent animals, let’s take a look at what tofu does to our bodies.

Through the coagulation of soy milk, tofu is packed with magnesium sulfate, an inorganic, highly cancerous causing salt. Tofu is truly not what it seems.

Splenda

SplendaAs a literal “additive” to our coffee and tea, Splenda can do some serious damage on the liver and kidneys. Artificial sweetener is never a good idea, but it almost seems as though Splenda was concocted by the devil himself.

Over-consumption of this awful agent can result the shrinkage of the thymus gland, the organ that produces T cells for the immune system. So essentially, ingesting Splenda results in the harming of our immune systems… how awful is that?

Hot Dogs

Hot DogsThe greatest American snack of all time is also one of the most repulsive foods we can consume thanks to it richness in preservative nitrates and large amounts of sodium.

Not only are hot dogs packed with rejected meat from different parts of animals, but the contaminant Orange B found in these dogs can wreak havoc on our livers and bile ducts. Gross!

Dyed Oranges

Dyed OrangesAny oranges that are not truly organic could be spray painted?! With the “ripe” illusion beaming from these little orange beauties, the artificial dyes of Red #1 and #2 found in this spray damages chromosomes and can easily lead to cancer.

Make sure to buy truly organic oranges the next time you’re at the store. Ask the produce employees just to be sure!

Concocted from genetically modified soybeans and injected with the potentially explosive chemical hexane, made from crude oil, soy protein is one of the worst things for our bodies.

Chewing Gum

Chewing GumSome may not consider gum a food, but when left in the mouth long enough to swallow artificial sugars and BHA, it still counts.

BHA is what is known as butylated hydroxyanisole and is used as a food preservative that can initiate blood clotting and has been linked to tumor growth. Unfortunately, the U.S. has not taken steps to ban this harmful component like Europe has, but we definitely need to consider it.

White Flour

White FlourWhite flour is not easily avoidable, but now that we know it contains the cancer- causing chemical chlorine dioxide, we will do our best.

This bleaching agent has even fallen on the radar of the Center for Science in the Public Interest due its harmful consequences, so find a whole-grain or whole-wheat flour next time you’re at the store.

White Sugar

White SugarSugar is bad. We all know that consumption of sugar without moderation is awful for us, but we have other “bones” to pick with it now.

After beingbleached, sugar is run through what is known as bone char or natural carbon: charred cattle bones. How bizarre is that?!

Turkey

TurkeyWe already mentioned processed meats but turkey is so awful that we feel compelled to go into detail… Containing the harmful agent arsenic, this meat is no stranger to chemical exposure.

In 2011, the carcinogenic chemical Roxarsone was removed by the National Chicken Council and replaced it with Nitarsone, another arsenic- based drug banned in Europe. This is fed to the turkeys in their first few weeks and is extremely toxic to humans, yet we still eat it on a regular basis. It goes without saying, choosing organic turkey is the way to go.

Salad Dressing

Salad DressingSalads are essentially good for us in general, but the sugary additives contained in most store-bought salad dressings definitely are not.

In particular, the ingredient sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, the thickening agent used in dressing, is quite toxic to our bodies and highly likely to cause cancer. Instead of opting out for the artificial dressing next time, choose the delicious olive oil or balsamic vinegar to top off your lettuce!

Baked Goods

Baked GoodsDuh, these are easily expected to show up on this list even though we enjoy baked goods quite often. In this case though, we basically know what we are getting into when indulging in a cookie or a cake, but do we know everything?

Potassium bromate, although seemingly friendly-sounding, is terrible for us. Banned in Europe, Canada and China, this ingredient is found in breaded products that we eat on a daily basis like rolls, bread, wraps and bagel chips and has shown potential to lead to kidney failure and even cell deterioration.

Dried Fruit Snacks

Dried Fruit SnacksJust as these are awful for our teeth, dried fruit snacks are packed with harmful sulfites that tend to have an effect on our allergies.

Considering these types of treats are packaged for years, the sulfites increase shelf life but also our chances of developing asthmatic tendencies like sneezing, throat swelling and even hives.

Artificial Chocolate

Artificial ChocolateJust like the cockroaches will survive forever, so will artificial chocolate. Made of corn, palm oil and petroleum, the harmful chemical Polysorbate 60 found in artificial chocolate is highly toxic and cancer- causing.

Think about how many things are dripping with artificial chocolate for a second… any “low calorie” snack you can think of, store-bought baked goods, cakes… the list goes on.

Pickles

PicklesThe extremely harmful chemical found in pickles known as potassium benzoate takes it to such a personal level that it actually affects our DNA.

After being studied by a molecular biologist, it was clear that benzoate attacked and damaged our mitochondria at the source. Foods besides pickles that contain this agent are syrups, jams, salad dressings, olives and even apple cider.

Jelly

JellyAlthough jellies and jams may seem like a healthy substitute to cream cheese, they are not all they appear to be. Rich in sugar and pectin, a nutrient-robbing fruit fiber, these “fruity” spreads are far more harmful to the body than we realize.

The stickiness of pectin that is utilized to make the product more spreadable actually ends up sticking to the healthy minerals and nutrients we ingest like beta- carotene, lycopene and lutein. But, instead of allowing these helpful and healthy sources to benefit our bodies, they carry them with them on their “way out.”

Donuts

DonutsWhat is there to say about the insanely delicious fried dough treats that make our hearts soar and our taste buds dance?

Other than being packed with trans fat, sugar and refined flour, donuts contain hydrogenated oils that lead to weight gain, obesity, heart issues and even prostate cancer. Can we not eat anything that tastes good?!
